Our Heritage

From 1940s trials to 35+ African markets

Seed Co’s story began in 1940 with a pioneering collective of African farmers and plant breeders who recognized that imported temperate seeds could not withstand the erratic rainfall, heat waves, and intense pest pressures of the continent.

Through decades of meticulous on-farm selection and scientific breeding, Seed Co developed Africa’s first commercial single-cross hybrid maize varieties. What started as small-scale trial plots has grown over eight decades into the premier Pan-African certified seed business.

Today, Seed Co Group operates dual listings on the Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE) and Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (ZSE), partnering with Limagrain (Vilmorin-Mikado)—one of the world’s leading seed companies—to bring state-of-the-art biotechnology, molecular breeding, and certified seeds to smallholder and commercial farmers across more than 35 countries.
